Evaluation

1.       What ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

There are two scenes in our 2 minute opening sequence to our movie, which are similar to scenes in two other movies. One scene is from i-Robot when Will Smith wakes up by the sound of his alarm clock and then has a shower. Our movie is also similar to adulthood because the way one of the characters in adulthood gets his gun out and threat people to give him all their money and in our movie the gangster robs Victim and when the victim punches the gangster, he gets frustrated and shoots him. We also used frequent cuts when Shahroz and Argun were fighting in the film, this is to show high energy on the scene like done in the many Adulthood film scene. We also did research on gangster clothing by watching movies like adulthood, Kidulthood, four brother, I robot and also step up 3. I noticed that new era caps are mostly worn by the gangsters and criminals, which means it was ideal for Shahroz to wear new era cap for the film. In Step up 3 and adulthood all the actors are wearing recognised branded cloths such as Nike, Adidas, Puma and Asics. For this specific reason Shahroz is also wearing Nike footwear & t-shirt and Adidas jacket, this made our film seem more realistic. I also created a sound track using Wave Editor and Garage Band, this sound track was hip-hop instrumental music, by creating this non-diegetic sound will help me build up tension and help me grab audience attention.

2.       How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Gangsters are represented negatively in our movie because the way the gangster wakes up in the morning and checks his wallet and makes his mind up to rob someone and then later takes the victim’s wallet & mobile and then beats him up then after that he shoots him which tells the audience that gangsters are violent and if you act aggressive against the gangster then, they will end up killing you.

3.       What kind of Media Institution might distribute your media product and why?

Pathe pictures is the type of company which might distribute our movie, this I because Pathe pictures has distributed a similar movie in past called Adulthood which was a success in UK and managed to make a profit of £1million. The reason Adulthood is similar movie to ours is because Adulthood didn’t have a recognised cast. Adulthood was also low budgeted film and had a niche audience like our film does.

4.       Who would be the audience for your media product?

Our main target audience is a niche audience. It is aimed at teenagers and young adults, 55% male and 45 % female and age 16-24.  My film would attract mostly to this aged audience because of the youngster casting in the film and the theme of crime. They would prefer watching gangster/crime films as youth are usually interested to see how other teenagers act in certain situation, as they have maybe been in that specific situation or are would like to find out what they should do if they were in that sort of situation.

5.       How did you attract/ address your audience?

We attracted our audience by choosing a genre that most youths would be interested in, the type of genre and hip-hop music, which gives the audience thrill and suspense. For example after watching my 2 minutes film opening the audience would want to know what happens after the gangster shot the victim. Plenty of teenagers and young adults are scared of being mugged in the street, mostly by someone who is younger than themselves and would therefore feel rather embarrassed so perhaps wouldn't report it. By visualising some of the stuff which a gangster or criminal would go through in our film, might also warn the audience from getting involved in to something similar in real life.  We also used gangster costume and a gun to make the film look more realistic; this will attract the audience because it will be more interesting watching something which is more realistic.

6.       What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

What we learnt from the technologies whilst we were in the process of creating our movie was how to use final cut express. We also used Cbyerlink director to do the editing at home. We learnt how to use the crop tools to cut out all the unnecessary scenes that we didn’t need, the speed and duration tool to speed up or slow down any scenes to make them look more effective and the tool which was used to fade in and fade out scenes. We also used Live Type to create the credits to show who played what role in the movie. I also improved my skills on Photoshop when I was creating logo for my production company. I have also learnt how to use a blog because I posted all my coursework on my blog and created a slideshow to show my script. I also learnt how to create a sound track for my movie which I done on garage band and wave editor, I created a sound track by using computerized instrument, I also added effects like beat, drums and many other to create sound track which goes well with our movie.

7.       Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

From the preliminary to the final piece is a huge step due to the way you have to edit the movie by adding effects to it, cutting bits and pieces out of the scene and fading scenes in and out, to make it look more effective and more like a movie. We also had to use the tripod to keep the camera steady to make it look professional which we didn’t do for our preliminary task. The preliminary also wasn’t as much planned comparing to how much planning we did for the final piece such as writing the script, doing a story board, using realistic props and customs. We also created sound for final piece to make the film look professional. I have also learnt few camera techniques such as frequent cuts to bring energy on scenes, also using zoom in to catch facial reaction of the actors.

Casting

Casting wasn't a problem as there was only two character required.

Shahroz Ahmed was as the gangster who killed the
person at the end . The person who was robbed was
Argun who helped me out with shooting. The Victim
was cast by a friend, Argun who was willing to play
the role so I casted Argun as the person who gets
robbed.

Victim -  Argun
Gangster - Shahroz Ahmed

Location shots

This location is under the tunnel. I thought this would be the perfect place to do the shooting as most people get robbed where there is usually dark and not many people are around. This location also looks like where gangsters would hang about and are most likely to mug someone.

This is my bedroom where my first part of film going to be shot. I choose my room as the location because I need to show in the film that I woke up and looked at my wallet and it was empty and which lead me on to killing a person because I needed money desperately.

Film Name

My films name is Notorious Enemy. Notorious means Famous or well known, typically for some bad quality or deed and Enemy is someone who is actively opposed. These to words go well with my film as Shahroz in the film is Character who kills an innocent person just because he didn't have any money on him

Prop and costumes

According to the genre that I pick for my movie I would need to use miss en scene to make sure that the film seen looks realistic and professional. To meet good standards I would need to use plenty of different equipment such as hoodies, caps, trackies, branded cloths, guns, knife and approbate shooting location. This will help me bring more liveliness and realism in the film. After I finished my script I decided that actors in my film will be using caps, fake gun, trackies, chains and hoodies. These type of equipment were also used in the film Adulthood and the costumes we use is usually worn by gangster or chavs, this means that I'm on the right track with custom.

Research into potential target audience

While making a film it is important to know your target audience. the reason why it is crucial to know your target audience is because it will help me decide what sort of content should be included in my media film e.g: a teenager will have a different taste in music to an old person or a child will have different editing style then a old man. This explains that there should good understanding between targeted audience and the film. By keep targeted audience in the head while making a film would also make a better revenue.
The target audience for my gangster opening film would be people in the 16-24 age range.
Plenty of teenagers and young adults are scared of being mugged in the street, mostly by someone who is younger than themselves and would therefore feel rather embarrassed so perhaps wouldn't report it. By visualising some of the stuff which a gangster or criminal would go through in the film, might also warn the audience from getting involved in to something similar in real life. The characters are communicating to the audience about the major flaws in society and so they would understand the issues easily.
The film Kidulthood (2006) is aimed at teenagers, as the cast is made up of mostly teenagers and it expresses issues that are sometimes common with them such as bullying, suicide and mugging. This makes it successful because it portrays these issues to a wider audience and the film’s popularity has increased due to the performance of the young actors and concerns raised in the film.

Sound Track

This the sound track which I created on garage band and wave editor.

Preliminary Clip

Lesson Summary

There are five codes which I noticed in different films opening, these are used to suggest something to audience and are used to create a meaning in the story. The Hermeneutic Code, which is also called the "enigma code" or "narrative enigma". The hermeneutic code are the unanswered question that audience would like to be answered. This is used to maintain the interest and the suspense for the audience. It is also used to make people watch the whole film and make them attract to the film. usually it is revealed until the end of the film and in most if films the beginning is essentially the ending.

Partial Answers -  is when there is little about of truth but not all of it, this is used to give the audience suspense and thrill.

Equivocation - this is a combination of truth and snare, this is used to confuse the audience and keep them interested in the film.

Jamming - is suggesting that there is a problem which may never be solved.

The  Proairetic Code - this is also known as action code, the Proairetic code  referrs to any other action or event that indicates something else is going to happen. It is useful code in for creating tension as audience would want to know what is going to happen next.

Film Opening Conventions Essay On Kidulthood With Respect To The Four Technical Codes

The genre of my film opening is going to be Gangster. I have looked at Kidulthood which is also Gangster genre film to help me out with camera, sound, mise en scene and editing techniques. Non-diegetic sound was used within two minutes in Adulthood.
The non-diegetic sound that was used in film was remixed RnB and a suspicious sound as someone is spying on a person.
There was also diegetic sound of people playing and shouting each others name out, all this diegetic sounds makes seem like an urban place because you can hear loads of people at once. There were plenty of people swearing in the movie, this is because most of the gangster swears frequently. The dialogue used by the characters are used with an accent, this is makes the film seem more realistic and would be unsuccessful without dialogues.
Frequent cuts were taken to show energy in the scenes and to show all the action which is going on. Different angles were shown to give audience the best view of the action covered.  Usually medium shot or long shot to show loads of people in a group and everyone is busy with something for example; one person texting on his mobile and another person is giving away leaflets for their party.
The costume used in this was particular shown in the first 2 minutes because all the students were in uniform but still one was wear a new era cap which the gangsters usually wear.
Nearly all the male character in the film got an angry face on them and all of them got attitude which also makes the film seem more realistic. One character is also shown kissing a girl in opening 2 minutes.

Slow motion to cover all the action when it shows person drilling with football. Zoom in and close up shot on people to show their facial reaction and to help audience pick up their facial reaction when the person is utilising the machine with care and concentrating. There are many characters doing something different with in 2 minutes to show that the school is busy and interesting for example; two characters is kissing each other, another two characters are handing out leaflet, different character is looking for someone and going around asking if they seen Claire and two more characters talking to each other about their life.

Opening Scene Of “Four Brothers”

The genre of the movie “Four Brothers” is action/gangster and is the same genre as my group are doing for the opening film scene of my movie. There are many types of camera shots, sound, mise en scene and not much editing techniques used in the first 5 minutes of the extract from “four brother”. In the first couple of seconds it shows a two shot, where it has two cars pulling up and it shows a lady pulling up out of one and does not show who is in the other. There is then a close up when is shows the lady is stopping the car and then is about to get out. An establishing shot showing us that it is an off licence little shop also showing us that the man is getting on the phone to ring up the police. There is then another two shot showing the lady to say stop or put down the phone in a gesture because the boy is apoligising.
Another over the shoulder shot is used when the lady is telling the boy off for attempting to shoplift, another over the shoulder shot is used after that showing the boy’s reaction’s which is also a reaction shot. There is then another two shot where the boy is saying “I wont steal anymore sir” again showing his reactions showing us that he is very sorry and nervous. There is then another wide shot being shown when the lady tells the boy to get out. There is a close up of one of the robbers lips when he shouts “now” showing that he wants the money from the till. There is then another over the shoulder shot on of the robbers putting a gun towards the man behind the tills. There is then a two shots showing the man grabbing the money and the gun that is being aimed at the man. The calm scene at the start and an action scene insistently shows the contrast between two scenes and this makes the audience decide instantly what actor are on good side and what actor are on bad side.

The mise en scene used in this extract are casual clothes and other bits of clothing like the skull hat that the boy is wearing and the balaclava the two robbers are wearing this signifies that they are both robbers. There are also guns used. The lighting used in this scene is from a normal light bulb. The acting throughout is very serious and some bits where it shows that they are scared. There are then lights coming from the gunshot when the two robbers find the lady and shoot her.

The sound used is There is diegetic music that starts playing in the first car that pulls up. Serious dialogue is used almost throughout the extract and then there is a scream showing that the lady is scared. The gunshot is a non diegetic sound where it shows the gun is being fired when a light starts flashing through the window.

Ideas Of Our Opening Sequence

Idea 1 -
My film is a bit similar to the movie "Adulthood" the way a very close friend of a gangster dies and a gang are out to find and hunt the murderers. The gangster is out to look for the murderers. Then the gangster finds the killer, He then asks who else was involved in the murder to find out as much as possible. And just when the friend is about to get the answer a person shot murderer from the back, leaving the friend not knowing anything about the murder. There is also a flash back which the actor see's when he is missing his brother. In this flash back he see's how his brother was murdered by rival gangsters. By doing this it gives a hint to the audience and explains what this film is about.

Idea 2:
In this film, there's is an gangster who wakes up one morning and checks his wallet and there is nothing in there. It shows him getting ready and taking to his friend how he's going to rob someone today because he's ran out of money. Then he gets a person in headlock and tells him to give all the money and he punches him back but the gangster punches him even harder and gets the money out of him. The person who got mugged punches the gangster again and then gangster takes his gun out and shots him and run away.

Film Opening Conventions Essay On Adulthood With Respect To The Four Technical Codes

The genre of my film opening is going to be Gangster. I have looked at Adulthood which is also Gangster genre film to help me out with camera, sound, mise en scene and editing techniques. Non-diegetic sound was used within two minutes in Adulthood.
The sound used was grime which goes well with the Adulthood scene because it’s fast music. The people that sing grime music are usually also gangster so it goes well with the scene. The dialogue used by the characters are used with an accent, this is makes the film seem more realistic and would be unsuccessful without dialogues.
Frequent cuts were taken to show energy in the scene, which covered many people dancing. Establish shot to show what is going on in the scene. Different angles were shown to give audience the best view of the action covered.  Usually medium shot or long shot to show loads of people in a group and everyone is busy with something for example, one person is drinking alcohol and another person is smoking cigarettes or weed.
The costume used by the gangster character was baggy cloth, long t-shirts, long chains, flat caps, recognisable branded trainers and clothing, hoodies, expensive jewellery. The character in this film also had different sort of weapon on them to fight, scare, steal people and also to protect them from others. The weapons used in the movie are knives and guns. The characters in this movie also used drugs for their personal pleasure. Most characters in the film are disrespectful and harmful to the local community. In the first opening two minutes one character shot a person on his leg when he trying to steal. Also the gangsters’ characters are crowded with girls all around. The area used in the movie is an urban area. Characters are also shown dancing around in a party.
Slow motion to cover all the action on the screen and to get the audience involved emotionally. Fast motion was also used which made the scene seems like things are happening fast. Close up shots to show reaction on characters face when the girl rejected the gangster. Many wipe shots to also explain that things are moving on. Showing two scenes at once on screen also made the film look busy and interesting.

Introducing Myself

Hi my name is Shahroz Ahmed, I am a media student at a 6th form school. I like watching action, comedy and gangster movies. My favourite films are Inception, The fighter, Hangover, Avatar 3D, Step up 3D and Adulthood. Part of my media studies coursework is to make a 2 minute film opening and this blog will show the process I take making my film opening. I am intrested in doing a gangster genre film opening. I'm going to be filming, acting and editing the film, while Sohil Kapoor who is in my group will be the camera men of the film and Argun is going to help me play a role in the film as well.
